1. What are the Division breakdowns for teams?
- Midget (4th – 6th grades)
- Grammar (7th and 8th grades)
- Cadet (9th – 11th grades; high school varsity players ineligible)
2. What are the levels of play?
➢ D1 Level (Best)
- Offers highest degree of competition
- Only division eligible for advancement to New England Tournament
➢ D2 Level (Better)
➢ "B" Level -- Midget Division Only (Instructional)
3. When does the season begin?
- The last weekend in October.
4. When does the season end?
- The end of February for regular season with playoffs in March.
5. When are the games?
- Home games will be on Saturday mornings or afternoons. Away games will be on either Saturday or Sunday afternoon.
6. What about practice?
- The times must be coordinated with the coaches, parents, players, and school. Due to limited gym availability, practice will be once per week for 1-1/2 hours. Practice time typically falls within the 6-9 PM time slot and should begin in October. Players desiring more playing time should consider participating in an additional youth league such as PYB (http://portsmouthyouthbasketball.com).
7. Where will the games be held?
- Home games will be at the Portsmouth Middle School. Away games will be at gymnasiums throughout the Diocese of Providence. The CAL office will release the schedule just prior to November 1st.
8. How many games are there?
- There are usually about 14 games for the regular season and another 3-4 games for playoff qualifiers.
9. What are the requirements for players?
- For St. Barnabas parishioners, mandatory attendance in Faith Formation classes. Registration for Faith Formation will be confirmed after basketball registration closes. Faith Formation attendance will be monitored throughout the season.
- Non-parishioners are encouraged to be active in their respective congregations (i.e., participation in Sunday or Sabbath Services, religious education, youth groups).
- All players gather at center court prior to each game to pray the Our Father together.
10. Any other requirements?
- All involved in the program, including parents, must adhere to Christian principles of sportsmanship (i.e., no profanity, arguing with referees, interfering with coaches, or taunting of an opposing team). In addition, there shall be no “coaching” from the stands. Fans are asked to limit their cheering to encouragement only.
- Copies of player birth certificates must be provided upon request.
11. What are the requirements for coaches (see download forms tab on Home Page)?
- ASEP certified
- Background Check (BCI)
- Training and adherence to “Diocese of Providence Safe Environment Policy”
- Adherence to the “CAL Coaches Code of Ethics”
